Library Workshop: Project MUSE

Project Muse is a database accessible through the Binghamton University Library. It provides the option of searching through several university presses within the context of subsets including humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. Upon entering the database’s main page, the student is given the option to either search articles or browse through web journals. After a choice is made between the two options, the site provides the user with more advanced categories.

If the user decides to search articles he can select one of the following subcategories, All Fields w/text, All Fields except text, Article text, Article author, Article title, Subject Heading, Journal Title, Author Reviewed, and Title Reviewed, listed atop the page. If not, the user can also look to the bottom of the page to divide the information by context, year, journal, discipline, and even languages. To the right of the page, MUSE provides resources that help the student cite, vodcast, identify, and work with their articles.

Project Muse allows students to sift through high scholarly content (or at least that’s what their mission is) and is a unique not-for-profit collaboration between library and publishers. MUSE comes equipped with 100% full text to over four hundred titles and its articles are available in both PDF and HTML formats. Also, indexing/abstracting services and popular e-journals including JSTOR, are linked to MUSE. This expands their content flow and along with their developed navigation system, lets students receive the ideal data.
