Globalization is the act of making the human experience a shared one, one that is tied to other cultures/nations by means of “making common.”1 This is accomplished and accelerated by the use of mass communication and advanced technology, including the Internet. Thus, the diffusion of new ideas and information takes place.2 Globalization can be likened to what is referred to as the American “melting pot.” Citizens of the world are able to take what was once associated exclusively to one, or very cultures and make it apart of their own. For example, Hip-Hop/Rap a genre of music that originated in the United States has found its way in many other nations around the world. Indian Hip-Hop artists are not rapping in the same fashion as Americans, yet if one listens to a sound-clip, it would be identifiable as Hip-Hop/Rap because of the shared elements that were blended.
I like how you referred to globalization as a "melting pot". I agree with your assumption that globalization can enhance ones knowledge of different cultures around the world. Globalization enhances and broadens access to information around the entire world.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Though this term is what's usually used to describe the US, in my opinion I feel like it better applies to what happens with globalization.
ReplyDeleteI like your example of referencing music in relation to globalization as it is one of the more subtle and overlooked illustrations, in today's society. Of course, the top hits are broad casted all over the world and recognized by the public through label, artist and etc. However, I feel globalization encompasses more the style and core elements of a genre, similar to what you stated, "it would be identifiable as Hip-Hop/Rap because of the shared elements that were blended."
