To communicate is to share information with others. We communicate constantly, from every word we utter to every smile we make. Communication comes in two forms – verbal and non-verbal. To understand the importance of communication in our lives, it’s crucial to know where the word comes from. The term communication literally means “to make common” (Hardt, 2004). This means we are sending and receiving messages all day long and make one person’s knowledge enter into a pool of communal knowledge. To communicate with people in your society is to bring everybody to gather and have something that will allow them to be a sustainable civilization (Hardt, 2004). Without the free-flow of information that we see today, we could potentially be in a similar situation to that seen in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave – only seeing shadow representations of the world.
