Name: Shahanwaz Syed
I like this title, it reminds me of the funny movie “Me, Myself and Irene” by Jim Carry. I’ll be honest, I don’t blog too much; I have a hard time keeping up with something as simple as face book. The main reason I bought an expensive black berry phone was so I could check blackboard on my phone, if anything, I miss the freedom of having a 30 dollar phone which I had no problem throwing all over the place and sleeping on. Just like a true friend it was always there for me in snow or rain. It reminds me the story of a man my father once told me about. The man was extremely rich and had lots of sheep and cattle, but one night deep during his sleep, he was robbed off of all his belongings. The next day the man was devastated that he lost everything he worked for, but at the same time he could finally sleep in peace because there was nothing left to lose anymore.
A year or two back I was fascinated by technology and glued to my computer all the time, maybe it was the lack of cultural connection which was far easier to establish online, but suddenly it hit me; I wanted to do more to my life than just evolve into a non physical being; spending way more time browsing on a wooden chair than I should be. Now I prefer playing Badminton or soccer, going to movies and then walking back home. Unfortunately most of these activities are only practical during summer, my winters are spent in doors watching TV and doing class work. I know I no longer have the attention my parents once gave me, but I am not willing to impose myself on the world. I will admit blogging if done right can be a very entertaining and healthy experience, after all; most of my views correlate with a famous Japanese blogger I follow religiously, but I’ve always been a listener, not a story teller or an entertainer.
The reason why I am taking this class is because in the past, classes such as these have been very interesting to be in. I always imagined history and global studies to be a boring subject, but I’ve come to realize that humans are social beings and the more we learn about each other the farther we get in our progression throughout life. There is a reason why solitary is considered the worst punishment. This is precisely why I plan to travel around the world (China, Japan, Iran, England) once I am done with all my studies. I used to hate diversity day and thought culture and traditions were waste of time, but recently as I have grown up I am starting to realize that these concepts can be pretty interesting. Everything is connected and when you are aware of one sector you become aware of another.
After I have traveled and experienced enough, hopefully without getting killed, robbed or worse, I will come back to United States and become a doctor like I have always wanted to. Right now I am not entirely sure which direction I want to go in. But yes, Global media narratives is a pretty interesting course, I just wish we watched more videos like the one we did on German Olympics because it's always interesting. Readings are good and they bestow us with knowledge and learning, but sometimes a picture or video can speak a thousand words and still be entertaining to watch.
