What is a Narrative?

There are many different and unique ways of telling a story. However, no matter what genre the story is told in, there always needs to be a connection in order to make sure that everything stays together and is coherent. A narrative can contain of plot, characters, settings and many other factors that put together a story. This technique is done through the use of a narrative. Many people throughout literature have had different definitons of the word narrative.

On author named Marie-Laure Ryan describes narrative as  the setting being important or how the narrative and the plot flow together. She feels as if an event or specific characters is necessary to make a narrative more significant to the viewer who is participating. Ryan goes on to say about narratives, "This characterization outlines three potential domains for a definition: discourse, story and use." that is her way of describing what a narrative is.
