What is globalization?

Globalization is a movement characterized by previously separate or distinct global entities (cultures, countries, states, ethnicities) becoming interconnected by means of a global network. Globalization is a holistic movement, encompassing not just economic or political aspects of these entities, but also including movements of culture, technology, philosophy, etc. on a global level.

The digital divide with respect to Globalization is the largest hole in the movement of globalization. Because so much of globalization depends on contemporary forms of communication via technology that is new (and, by virtue of being new, also expensive), globalization is occurring more quickly and in larger amounts in countries that are the most well off economically and advanced technologically. The result is a largely hegemonical globalization with the notable absence of certain non-global entities (for example, most of the continent of Africa.)
