Narrative
Narrative is a mental record of our life experiences. Narrative not only expresses what is seen but also how our minds react to incidents. It holds a certain complexity. A narrative is more than stating what has happen, it allows the mind to discover and analyze events. Narrative relates back to the way we understand things, the curiosity to know more than what is simply seen. We dig in and process every aspect of life. A narrative can explain a few moments in great detail or many years in a few simple words. The South African novelist J.M. Coetzee explains narrative as pleasurable human activity to control time. He writes, “The experience of time bunching and becoming dense at points of significant action in the story, or thinning out and skipping or glancing through nonsigificant periods of clock time or calendar time, can be exhilarating – in fact it may be at the heart of narrative pleasure” (Abbott 6) Narrative helps our minds process and remember.

Dear Sara,
ReplyDeletethank you so much for broadening the horizon of narrative towards South Africa.
Do you see levels of complexity in a narrative, or do you regard a narrative as a simple common denominator?
