What is Communication?

Communication is a process of relaying information on a global and personal scale. Communication allows for personal opinions and emotions to be expressed, which proves to be important because we need to be able to understand one another. Without communication, individuals would not be aware of the constant changes that are taking place around us. It’s clearly important to keep oneself updated on global events and simply the lives of others. Being able to communicate effectively allows for relationships to form and be sustained.

Communication pathways are ever changing. Technology has developed immensely and has enabled us to be able to stay in contact with others in more convenient ways. Text messaging is one communication pathway that everyone has jumped on board with as it allows people to be in constant contact. Text messaging has even replaced the simplest form of communication; talking on the phone. Before I had text messaging I would call my friends and family members whenever I needed something and now I have limited my communication to texting. The only time I talk on the phone is for something extremely important or if I need to explain a long story to someone. Texting has become a norm of society and if one hears that someone does not have texting, one thinks that is something bizarre, or out of the ordinary. Facebook and Myspace has also extended our form of communication. Not only can people facebook chat and myspace chat, but they are able to upload pictures for their friends to see. One can comment on their website and even send emails. Using facebook, which has become the primary internet networking site, allows you to let your friends know what you are doing at any moment. You are able to meet new people via facebook as well and receive event invitations. Teenagers in today’s society abuse Facebook. Twitter is another form of communication via the internet where people can post where they are or any general information they would like to relay. Individuals have moved away from email and writing letters since these other forms of communication are more reliable, easier, and you can receive instant feedback.

Individuals are able to learn about global occurrences by reading the newspaper. One can receive the same information over the internet as well. Magazines provide new fashion statements, updates regarding the lives of popular celebrities, and other miscellaneous topics that magazine editors feel will catch the interest of their readers.

Individuals communicate in different ways. Sign Language is a form of communication, a language that is used by deaf individuals. Big D deaf individuals honor being deaf and do not communicate orally. They solely rely on sign language. Little d deaf individuals use sign language as well, but will orally interact with people. Those who are blind communicate orally but interact in the world by using a guide dog or a guide stick, interacting and communicating, relaying on the environment on a constant basis.

Communication is essential to our everyday lives and it is important to keep a healthy relationship between the world, in order to attain knowledge and express our individuality.
