Communication is everything. It defines social boundaries, connects people with events and allows for individualize expression. Hardt refers to communication as the practice of “making common” (p 7). It provides individuals with the information they need to be able fit in with society. How one should act around business associates, peers, the elderly and children is all relayed through communication. It establishes instructions such as state boundaries and road signs and dictates the rules for telephone use and consumption habits. Hardt writes “…communication is the discourse of society, which defines, organizes, and determines life in its social or political manifestations” (pg3). Social character is deeply entwined with communication. Individuals pick up social norms and cues from communicating with one another. They acquire knowledge and experience different events throughout the world. Communication is needed for individuals to function in society.
