Communication is an interchanging of thoughts, opinions, or information by the use of speech, writing or signs. They can be relayed through telephone, telegraph, radio, television, etc (Dictionary.com) Communication is a little more complex than what people may think. It is not as simple as sending a message and receiving a response. Responses take time and thought, but unfortunately not everyone thinks something through before responding, but that is a different topic.
Taking the linguistics approach the form in which we communicate is how we transfer information and the function in which we communicate is what we are trying to convey. We can communicate in different languages and through our body language. People can also communicate through text, instant messaging providers such as AOL, email, social networks such as Facebook or Myspace, or blogs such as Blogspot. Not saying that people only communicate through these medias, but statistically they are being used more frequently. As a culture we are relying heavily on the World Wide Web and evidently our communication has become instantaneous. What people communicate is not as simple as the methods. Remember the days of sending letters through the mail just to see how a person was doing? I surely don’t.
